Up and Down Oval Express Series Debut for Williams

There were plenty of positives and negatives to take from Liam Williams’ debut assault on the Oval Express Formula 500 Series.

Although his Oval Express Series ended with a huge crash into the wall during the sixth and final round at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway (TPCR), Williams was still able to draw on the positives that he achieved during the other rounds of the series.

“It certainly wasn’t the way I wanted to finish the series, that’s for sure,” the 19-year-old said.

“The car is heavily damaged and the accident happened when I broke a steering arm and then lost all use of the brakes and I was nothing but as passenger as I headed towards the wall at a considerable speed.

“Shortly after we returned home to Victoria the car was taken to Greg Foster at D&F Race Products and although the damage can be fixed we will be forced to miss the remainder of this month, as the car is going to take somewhere between two to three weeks to repair.”

Heading into the final round of the Oval Express Series Williams was placed just outside the Top 10 in the point standings and was looking to move up a few positions with a strong result during the final round.

“Everything looked good going into the second heat race as we had finished the opening heat race in fourth, and wanted a Top 10 result for the feature race, but my crash ended any hope of that during the second round of heat races,” Williams recalled.

“We certainly weren’t the fastest car out there over the series, as we are a bit down on horsepower compared to many of our drivers, and managed to still be in contention with the Top 10 mainly due to our consistency.”

The highlight for Williams over the course of the Oval Express Series was his sixth place finish, after starting from position 13 in the field, at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway in Victoria where the fourth round was held.

Williams wanted to say a big thanks to his father John Williams, and crew members Daniel and David Meggs, for all their support and hard work they put in throughout the Oval Express Series.
