Bags Maiden Formula 500 Victory:
After
two months on the sideline, Victorian based rookie Formula 500 driver,
Liam Williams returned to the track in triumphant style when he
claimed victory in the latest round of the Victorian Stampede Series
on Saturday night (March 1) at Ballart’s Redline Raceway.
Due
to a few mechanical gremlins earlier in the night, Williams started
the feature race from position 11, but he managed to move quickly
towards the front of the field, firstly due to two cars getting
tangled up, and in the closing stages of the 20-lap event he managed
to inherit the lead after the driver ahead of him was forced to
retire with a fuel tank issue.
Once
in the lead Williams lead the remainder of the distance and took
a comfortable victory at the fall of the chequered flag in what
was his very first feature race victory in a Formula 500 since stepping
into the class late last season.
“If
someone had said to me at the start of the night that I would be
standing in victory lane at the end of the night, I would have told
them they were kidding themselves, but to actually do it is simply
wonderful,” the 20-year-old expressed.
“Heading
into the night I wasn’t setting my expectations too high, as we
had just got the car back after our big crash back in January, and
we were trialling a few new modifications we had made to the car
during the rebuilding process and I must say they worked well.

“During
my run towards the front in the feature race we had good car speed
and I was a bit lucky with a few cars retiring in front of me at
various stages, so that made the charge forward that much easier.”
Williams
finished second in two out of his three heat races, and in the other
heat race, which he was leading at the time, he failed to finish
to fuel system problems.
There
is no rest for Williams as he is set to travel to Mortlake Speedway
for the next round of the Victorian Stampede Series this Saturday
night (March 8).
