Australian Title Ends on a Premature Note for Williams
For
Liam Williams his first Australian Formula 500 Title attempt over
the Easter Long Weekend at Lismore Speedway (Northern NSW) was filled
with plenty of promise, but sadly it ended on a premature note during
the early stages of the feature race.
After
winning the repechage Williams made quick progress from his 18th
starting position in the feature race but on the second complete
restart was where the 20-year-old’s night came to an end as he was
innocently involved in someone else’s accident.
Williams
had worked his way up 12th during the opening lap of the feature
race when former Australian Champion Matt Brown came in contact
with another competitor that had slowed due to mechanical dramas,
and rolled over three times.
“I
made a good start and moved quickly towards the Top 10 only to make
contact with Matt Brown when he spun across the track after contact
with the slowed car and that tipped me over and I rolled over three
times, so that ended my night there and then,” Williams reflected.

“Although
I had rolled over three times there wasn’t too much damage to the
car itself, and it’s safe to say that I felt I was a good shot to
finish well within the Top 10, but sadly that didn’t eventuate.”
The
beginning of Williams’ Australian Title tilt didn’t start in the
best of fashion as he was well off the pace during practice and
when he changed mufflers that solved that issue.
During
the opening heat race Williams took a commanding victory, and he
then backed it up with a fifth place finish in the next heat race,
before being controversially disqualified for jumping the cone on
the restart during the third and final heat race. As a result of
being disqualified from his third heat race Williams was forced
to qualify for the feature race via the repechage, which he ended
up winning comfortably.
It
is hoped that Williams’ # 62 RTS will ready for next Saturday night
(March 29) for the annual non winged Formula 500 event at Laang
Speedway in Victoria.
